Tequila Explosion Symphyllia is a visually striking large-polyp stony (LPS) coral defined by its intense orange base tones, vivid yellow highlights, and rich red patterning radiating across each lobe. The colour arrangement creates a dramatic, explosive appearance that immediately draws attention under reef lighting.

Symphyllia corals develop thick, fleshy tissue over a solid skeletal framework, forming the classic brain-like structure for which they are well known. Because of its strong colour separation and symmetrical patterning, this specimen stands out clearly in mixed and LPS-focused reef aquariums without appearing chaotic.

Colour and Visual Character

This Symphyllia displays saturated orange tissue accented by glowing yellow bands and deeper red tones concentrated around the central valleys. Under blue and actinic lighting, the yellow highlights intensify while the orange retains warmth, creating layered depth and a striking visual effect throughout the lighting cycle.

Once settled, the coral exhibits full daytime tissue expansion. This expansion enhances its overall presence and allows the colour bands to remain clearly defined, without any true movement.

Care Level and Placement

Tequila Explosion Symphyllia is a slow-growing, fleshy coral that thrives in stable reef systems. It prefers moderate lighting and low to moderate, indirect flow, allowing the tissue to expand fully without stress. Strong or direct flow should be avoided.

Placement on the sand bed or lower rockwork is recommended. Because Symphyllia can extend sweeper tentacles, adequate spacing from neighbouring corals is important. Minimal disturbance during the initial acclimation period supports long-term health and consistent expansion.

Feeding and Compatibility

Although this coral relies on symbiotic zooxanthellae, it benefits from occasional target feeding. Small meaty foods or fine frozen blends can support steady growth and colour retention. Controlled feeding also helps maintain balanced nutrient levels within the aquarium.

🚚 Coral Acclimation Guide

To help your coral settle in comfortably, float the sealed bag in your aquarium for 20–30 minutes to allow temperature acclimatisation.

After this period, remove the coral from the bag and place it directly into the aquarium. Do not drip acclimatise, as prolonged exposure to shipping water can stress corals.

For the first 24–48 hours, position the coral in a low light and low flow area. This allows it to adjust gradually to its new environment. After this period, you can slowly move the coral to its final position based on its lighting and flow requirements.
